Clinical Pastoral Education

Program Objectives and Methods

Clinical Pastoral Education is a professional education program available for seminarians, ministers and laypeople who wish to further develop their ability to provide pastoral care in a healthcare setting.  The program allows its students to learn basic pastoral skills while functioning as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.  It also promotes an understanding of current medical and ethical healthcare issues and encourages an introspective look at his or her own faith in light of the experiences of ministry.

Program Features

The Clinical Pastoral Education program through Christian Homes offers several features including:

  • Individualized, professional learning contracts
  • Interdisciplinary seminars, lectures and readings
  • Written reports and case conferences
  • Team ministry with colleagues and other professionals in ministry and healthcare
  • Ministry to residents, family members and staff at senior living facilities

Program Director and Supervisor

Dr. Larry Brandon serves as Vice President of Pastoral Services for Christian Homes, Inc., a role he assumed in 2004. Experienced as a preaching pastor and as a supervisor for ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education), he is highly qualified to direct and supervise the Christian Homes’ CPE program.


Previous to Christian Homes, Dr. Brandon had more than 40 years experience as an ordained Christian Church/Church of Christ minister, a Campus minister for the University of Kentucky and Director of Spiritual Services and Patient Advocate for Howard Health Systems. Dr. Brandon is a graduate of Milligan College (BA), Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M. Div.) and Lexington Theological Seminary (D. Min.).  


Dr. Brandon has trained more than 383 chaplains, ministers and seminarians since 1974. He served with the East Central Region of ACPE as a member of the General Assembly, chair of two committees and as an executive officer. Most recently, Dr. Brandon served as treasurer and as a member of the National Budget and Investment Committee with the East central Region of ACPE.

Christian Homes campuses in Lincoln, Springfield and Decatur are clinical placement site options for students in the CPE program.  Christian Homes is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE) for Level I and II CPE.
